COMPTEL Applauds Sensenbrenner, Conyers Bill
Legislation will help protect against toll booths on the Internet
WASHINGTON, DC – May 18, 2006 – F. James Sensenbrenner, Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, and John Conyers Jr., Ranking Member of the Committee, today introduced HR 5417, the “Internet Freedom and Nondiscrimination Act of 2006,” legislation to amend the Clayton Act to ensure competitors and consumers have a remedy for discrimination or anticompetitive behavior by companies that control access to the Internet. The following statement may be attributed to Earl Comstock, President and CEO of COMPTEL:
"Chairman Sensenbrenner and Congressman Conyers have always been staunch advocates for consumers and a competitive communications industry. This bill demonstrates that members of the House Judiciary understand the dangers posed by the reconsolidation of Ma Bell and the adverse impact that it could have on the open Internet. This bill is a great step in the right direction toward establishing much needed safeguards, especially in light of the FCC's complete capitulation to those who would restrict access to the Internet."
